Department of Special Services

The goal of the Center Line Public Schools, Department of Special Services, is to support the district vision in providing all students with an exemplary education that develops lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

Children with special needs may possess a unique pattern of strengths and weaknesses that will require additional supports in their learning and performance.  We are excited about the broad continuum of programs and services that we offer students in the Center Line School community.

Classroom Programs:

Within the CLPS district, each of our schools at the elementary and secondary levels offer programs for students qualifying for special education support.  Within these programs, support is provided to students that have any of the primary handicapping conditions as defined by The Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education, they include: Cognitive Impairment, Emotional Impairment Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment, Physical Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Speech and Language Impairment, Early Childhood Development Delay, Specific Learning Disability, Severe Multiple Impairment, Autism and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Most of our students identified as eligible and requiring special education services, receive services in their neighborhood schools.  A small number of students, however, require more specialized programming.  Specialized programs in the area of cognitive impairments for elementary age students are provided at Crothers Elementary School.  Wolfe Middle School offers programming for students with cognitive impairments in grades 6 through 8.  Additionally, CLPS operates in a consortium with neighboring school districts, allowing students from neighboring districts to participate and providing our students with additional special programs.  High School students are provided opportunities to participate in vocational programs that transition services in preparing for life after high school.

A smaller number of students require more specialized and restrictive programming designed to meet their specific needs.  Such programs are provided through Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) Center Programs.

Ancillary Support Services:

In addition to the program offerings within the district and the MISD consortium, many students benefit from the support of ancillary services.  The CLPS Special Services Department has on staff, school psychologists, speech and language providers, teacher consultants and school social workers.  These staff members are an integral part of the team that provide services for our students in each of our buildings.
